Jesus made clear to his disciples that their source of joy in life and ministry must not be found in what they do for him but in who they are in him. He knew that there would soon come a time when there would no longer be signs and wonders to encourage them, but instead, there would be hardship, trials, persecution, and even death for his name.
At such times, Jesus did not want his followers to be robbed of joy, so he taught them to find their true source of joy and fulfillment in something other than what many call ministry success.
